Elomatic set out to investigate the feasibility of creating threads — including built-in threads — using Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) technology. The goal was to understand both the potential and the practical limitations for future business cases involving complex threaded components.

Together with the design team, a series of focused design sessions were held to explore the specifics of thread design, including clearance requirements, relevant standards, and how the LPBF process affects these features.
The designed parts were produced, documented, and shipped by the AM Campus operators, providing real-world data for evaluation.
This project delivered valuable learnings on the optimal clearances for thread production, as well as a deeper understanding of LPBF’s capabilities in producing otherwise difficult geometries with ease. These insights open the door to new applications of additive manufacturing for threaded components in demanding industrial contexts.
