The FAME × Patria Additive Manufacturing Design Challenge is still open — and the winner will be announced at the Subcontracting Fair Finland in Tampere (29 Sep – 1 Oct 2026).
We launched this challenge in March 2026 together with Patria and with the support of Siemens and LUT University. The response was enthusiastic, but student spring schedules and the genuine complexity of the task meant many teams didn’t have the time to complete their submissions. So we’ve done the logical thing: extended the deadline to give everyone a fair shot.
New submission deadline: 2 September 2026
The Challenge
Patria is looking for an additively manufacturable mechanical fuse: a structural component that absorbs a defined impulse load (4 kN, 50 ms) through controlled plastic deformation, buckling only when a specific threshold is reached while remaining rigid under lower loads. Auxetic structures and topology optimisation are strongly encouraged.
The goal: maximise elastic and plastic energy absorption while minimising the impulse passed through the bracket.
Why Enter?
- Industry recognition from Patria’s engineering experts
- Free Siemens software licences for all registered participants
- Winner announced at the Subcontracting Fair Finland — one of Finland’s premier industrial events
- Real engineering impact in demanding defence and structural applications
Open to students at Finnish and Nordic universities and universities of applied sciences, individually or in teams of up to 4.
How to participate
- Register for the challenge by filling out the registration form link.
- Receive the full design problem statement, specifications document, and access to free Siemens software licences if requested.
- Develop your AM-optimised design and submit your 3D model (.step, .stl, native CAD) together with a design report before 2 September 2026.
