FAME Symposium 2025Empowering Innovation Through Additive Manufacturing

Call for Participation

FAME, in collaboration with Wärtsilä and Tampere University, invites University students to participate in an exciting Additive Manufacturing (AM) Design Challenge! This is a unique opportunity to showcase your creativity and engineering skills while contributing to real-world industrial applications. Join us in redefining the possibilities of AM design and shaping the future of manufacturing!

Why Participate?

  • Industry Recognition – Your designs will be reviewed by experts from Wärtsilä, Tampere University and FAME.
  • Skill Development – Enhance your AM design knowledge through practical experience.
  • Networking Opportunities – Connect with professionals in the field and explore potential career paths.
  • Prizes & Recognition – Winning designs may be further developed for industrial applications.

Challenge Overview

Wärtsilä is looking for novel and innovative AM part designs that demonstrate the potential of additive manufacturing in industrial applications. Participants will be given a specific design problem statement related to Wärtsilä’s operations and asked to create an AM-optimized solution. In this design challenge, the objective is to create an innovative cooling solution for a component to be manufactured using metal additive manufacturing (AM), specifically laser powder bed fusion technology (L-PBF).

Who Can Participate?

  • Open to students from universities and technical universities of applied sciences with an interest in additive manufacturing, engineering, and design.
  • Individuals or teams (up to 4 members) can participate.

Key Requirements

  • AM-Optimized Design: The design must leverage the benefits of additive manufacturing, such as design freedom, lattice structures or functional integration.
  • Feasibility & Innovation: The part should be manufacturable by Laser Powder Bed Fusion Process and demonstrate clear advantages over conventional manufacturing methods.
  • Presentation & Justification: Participants must submit a detailed design report explaining the concept design and the choices taken, material considerations, and manufacturing feasibility, whicle considering the design constrains and consideration explained in the design problem statement and specifications document.

Timeline

  • Design Challenge Launch Date: 24. February 2025
  • Submission Deadline: 11. April 2025
  • Final Evaluation & Results Announcement: 30. April 2025

How to Participate?

  1. Register for the challenge by filling out the form: https://forms.office.com/e/pZnGfJwBqu
  2. Receive the design problem statement and specifications document.
  3. Develop your AM-optimized design and submit your 3D model (3 files needed: .step format, .stl format and CAD model format), and a short design report.
  4. Await feedback and results from the expert panel.

Awards & Recognition

  • Winning design will be showcased at the FAME Symposium and may be considered for further development with Wärtsilä.
  • A mini-sized 3D-printed version of the winning design.
  • The winning team will be awarded free participation in the FAME Symposium.
  • For the winning team an exclusive tour to the AM Campus in Vaasa will be organized.
