Tommi Uski studied at the Helsinki University of Technology (now Aalto University), specializing in machine design with a focus on ship machinery and mechatronics. His early interest in software led him to develop user interfaces for measuring devices and work in IT infrastructure and mechanical design within a startup environment for over a decade.
Tommi joined Raute in 2012, transitioning to a larger industrial environment and settling into Lahti with his family. Starting with mechanical design in the R&D team, he later became the leader of the group and took on responsibility for the company’s patent processes. Around 2014, a student trainee introduced him to selective laser sintering (SLS) 3D printing, an encounter that sparked Tommi’s interest in additive manufacturing (AM) and his journey started there.
Though not a self-described expert, Tommi recognizes the practical value of AM in engineering workflows. At Raute, he serves as an internal go-to person for 3D printing insights. The company uses an FDM printer and collaborates with external providers like Materflow to prototype parts efficiently. He also engages with FAME ecosystem companies like Delva, AMEXCI, and 3DStep, leveraging ecosystem collaborations to deepen Raute’s AM capabilities.
“Inside FAME, you get so much more understanding and you get more connections in AM,” Tommi says.
Tommi sees Raute moving toward digital services and analyzers, while mechanical R&D holds steady. At Raute, whether he’s advising on prototype feasibility or evaluating materials with partners, Tommi brings a practical, solutions-oriented mindset. His ability to translate complex AM concepts into real-world applications supports Raute’s shift toward more agile and digitally enabled product development.

His hope is for AM to evolve toward supporting the production of larger parts: a key requirement at Raute. He’s also excited about the increasing variety of printable materials and the possibilities they create.
Beyond work, Tommi enjoys building and flying radio-controlled model airplanes and helicopters and plays padel and badminton casually with friends, aligning with his engineering mindset and personal enthusiasm for making and crafting.
Tommi is an active and valued member of the FAME ecosystem. He serves both on our Operational Board and on our Management Board, contributing not only technical expertise but also strategic insights into how AM can develop across industries. We are very grateful for his continued participation, and for Raute’s meaningful engagement in FAME activities. See more of Raute’s activities at AM Campus here.
